BIO

Daria Vergina (b. 1987, Kohtla-Järve, Estonia) is an Estonian contemporary artist whose painting practice explores perception, inner experience, and the phenomenology of human existence through the language of abstraction.
Throughout her practice, Daria has returned to the image of the horizon, ultimately recognizing it not as a landscape motif but as an existential threshold. Working with acrylic paint and a restrained palette of blacks, greys, whites, and natural earth tones, Vergina creates contemplative compositions in which silence, emptiness, and gesture become active elements of perception.

Her artistic practice has evolved through sustained independent research, engagement with contemporary art discourse, and participation in professional educational programs.
Based in Kohtla-Järve, Estonia, Daria Vergina lives and works in Estonia. She is currently expanding her international exhibition practice and developing collaborations with galleries, curators, and cultural institutions.

Artist Statement

I spent a long time wondering why I return to the horizon again and again. Over time, I realized that I have never painted landscapes. My only subject has always been the human being—their inner world and their capacity to move beyond their own limits.
In my work, I explore the horizon as an inner state. For me, it is not the line between the earth and the sky, but a territory of transition between fear and trust, limitation and freedom, who we have been and who we are still capable of becoming. The horizon exists not outside us, but within us. It continually recedes as we move toward it, becoming a metaphor for human experience and inner expansion.
My understanding of the horizon has been shaped by phenomenology and its conception of the horizon as an ever-expanding boundary of human experience. My paintings therefore invite the viewer to move beyond habitual perception and open themselves to the possibility of seeing themselves differently.
I am interested in the moment when familiar coordinates no longer function and a person finds themselves faced with the necessity of stepping into the unknown. It is precisely within this space of uncertainty that an encounter with the self becomes possible. My works create a space where viewers can pause and meet their own inner horizon.
I work with abstraction because it leaves room for personal experience. I use acrylic paint and a restrained palette of blacks, greys, whites, and warm natural tones. For me, colour carries meaning, while the line becomes a metaphor for a fragile and constantly shifting boundary. I deliberately preserve areas of emptiness and retain the traces of the brush's movement. Within this minimal language, a space of silence emerges—one in which the viewer becomes an active participant in the work.

Horizon Silent series

Silent Horizon is a series of abstract works in which I relocate the horizon from the external landscape to the inner human experience.
Through a minimalist visual language, open areas of the canvas, and a restrained palette of black, grey, and beige, these works create a space for contemplation. Here, the horizon is no longer a line between sky and earth, but an inner threshold between fear and awareness, limitation and possibility.
Rather than offering fixed interpretations, the works invite viewers to pause, experience silence, and encounter their own inner horizon.
